ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

When a cavity is too large or deep and is very close to the nerve then a filling will not be an ideal solution.

In all of these situations it is best to clean the tooth along with the canals of its root, and hence the name, root canal treatment. A root canal is needed when a tooth’s pulp becomes infected. When this happens, you will likely have some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Severe toothache
  • Prolonged tooth sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Discoloration of a tooth
  • Swelling and tenderness in the gums
  • A persistent pimple on the gums

NUMBER OF APPOINTMENTS AND THE TIME

-Varies on a case by case basis depending on the severity of the inflammation and infection.

For the last appointment, the dentist will make sure the canals are dry and free of infection and will then pack and seal the tooth followed by crown. Because the tooth becomes brittle after RCT and will be prone to breaking or cracking if biting down on hard surfaced food.
